National Stroke Week 10-16 September 2012

National Stroke Week is on 10-16 September 2012. The National Stroke Foundation is "the only national not-for-profit organisation that works with stroke survivors, carers, health professionals, government and the public to reduce the impact of stroke on the Australian community." Their research reveals that 1 in 6 people will have a stroke and that they can happen to anyone. They provide these six steps to work towards preventing stroke: [bullets]

  • Know your personal risk factors: high blood pressure, diabetes and high blood cholesterol
  • Be physically active and exercise regularly
  • Avoid obesity by keeping to a healthy diet
  • Limit alcohol consumption
  • Avoid cigarette smoke, seek help to stop now
  • Learn to recognise the warning signs of stroke and act FAST
